I'm thinking, "Does anyone remember what a cow thump is?" And what memories do you have about them?

People of all ages who remember great times in Growing Up Bloomsbury. Let's reminisce.
I'm not sure I know what a cow thump is, but I do know what cow tipping is!
ReplyDeleteDon't tell me you went after Pickel's or Wilson's cows now?
ReplyDeleteAnd here I thought you were one of the innocent ones ;)
callathump or callithump originated in england i believe, it was a noisy parade around the newly weds house kinda to spoil thier first nite. doesnt anyone google or use wikipidia??
ReplyDeleteClose but no banana in old time Bloomsbury. ;)
ReplyDeleteWe would gather up the kids in town. Go to the homes of the newlyweds and make as much ruckas as we could to get them going. Any kind of noise maker would do. Stomping our feet and screaming, "We want Ice Cream". In the meantime the groom would make arrangements with either Sheets and Gardner or Leo to give us ice cream. Then they would quickly write up tiny slips of paper with numbers on them and distribute them to the kids. We would then take them to the designated store and they would give us ice cream. The last one I recall was for Bev Haring and Red McQuaid. My dad told me they had one for him. I assume then the groom had to go to the store to pay for all that ice cream. It was the GREATEST for us kids. In retrospect I'm not so sure how the newlyweds felt about it all. LOL
So the last one was probably early 1960's.
Oh, my gosh! My "little" brother, Dale, told me about this site and it's great!! I'm proud of my roots in Bloomsbury and have many fond memories. As a matter of fact, my husband and I go down to see my Dad, Jim Gardner, (of Sheets and Gardner) twice a month! I DO remember the cow thumps and enjoyed lots of free ice cream. I'm living north of Scranton and have never found anyone outside of Bloomsbury who has heard of a cow thump.
ReplyDeleteWe all remember things differently and I could be wrong on this but I remember the last cow thump as being for a couple that I do not remember their name. They rented the second level of Harry Steele's House on the corner of Willow Ave. and Church Street. When we went there and started stomping on the porch yelling "We Want Ice Cream" they chased us away and that is my last memory of a cow thump. Of course we all had many good cow thumps before the last one I remember.
ReplyDeleteWas it Ginger Steele/Rush? I know they lived above her dad when we lived on Willow Avenue. Through Joan Berger, my cousin, I can get Ginger's email and see if she's interested in being a member.
ReplyDeletePat GREAT HEARING FROM YOU!! Yeah it was a wonderful place to grow up. I remember one of my rare ventures on Willow Avenue when I was young, living on West Street. And I apparently did something and your mom let me have it with both guns. As I recall it had something to do with you. But I can't remember what I did or said. I'm sure before I got home my folks knew what I was up to.
ReplyDeleteAll the adults in town looked out for all us kids and helped keep us in line. Too bad everyone is afraid to do that these days. ;(
Pat, being the eldest and Dale is no longer around home if I understand correctly. Can you see if you can get more info from your dad? Be sure to tell him what we are doing here, k?
ReplyDeleteThanks
BTW odd I just found some old noise makers that were in my folks house. LOL I had to tell my girls what they were for.
ReplyDeleteI so remember them. Growing up in Bloomsbury every time somebody got married we went to their door and knocked on their door and they had to give us something. Maybe ice cream at sheets and gardeners? But I love them
ReplyDeleteJust ran across this site while Googling. Did not know why I thought of Cow Thump. Crazy but I go back to Graduating grade school there in 1957 and I was the ring bearer for Doug Pickel Jr. Doug Fleming
